You are not dressed without a hat
“Major Hats & Suits” in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant and the “Hat Ladies”
I visited this shop in the Old Village of Mount Pleasant and was fascinated by the selection of “fascinators” and fedoras and all kinds of different hats for ladies and gentlemen. What a treasure to find! The owner told me that this building has existed since 1947 and the hat shop was opened here at this location in 2005. There are hats of all kinds of shapes and colors and customers, and one can order from a catalog or pick one right in the store. Prices are very reasonable and suit any budget.
This reminded me to tell you about the “Hat Ladies “club www.hatladies.org we have here in Charleston. Archie Burkel, also known as “Top Hat,” is the founder of this group of ladies group established in 2001 and now also open to gentlemen! In the beginning, she gathered other ladies to join her and wear hats, not just on special events or occasions but also on a regular day!
“Hat Ladies” got together for parades on Carolina Day or other events, and the local newspaper finally wrote an article about these ladies. That is when the membership grew, and to this day, there are ladies not just from d’town Charleston but from many areas around Charleston who are wearing hats proudly to lunches and special occasions, or in parades or special gatherings. Always a beautiful sight to see.
The love of hats is not tied to a particular gender or culture but cuts across all differences. It is the perfect icebreaker and conversation piece. So, if you are looking for a hat, try this shop right here in Mount Pleasant (102 Royall Ave), and I am sure you can find one which suits you perfectly!
