Top Reasons to Love Aldi
Short for Albrecht Discount, the German-founded subsidiary of Hofer KG of Austria has recently opened for no-frills grocery shopping in Mt. Pleasant. Located in the former PINZ Bowling and More which I believe was the Winn-Dixie anchor store for the East Cooper Shopping Center back in the early 1980’s when I first got to know and love Mt Pleasant. On a side note, I was sad to see that the Radio Shack at the other end of the plaza had closed.
Interestingly enough, Trader Joe’s, which has a store at 401 Johnnie Dodds, is owned by Aldi Nord, its sister company, but is independent and has no operating relationship.
Here are reasons you will either love or hate this store:
- Insanely good value on the fruits and vegetables. There are not 65 choices for salad dressing or 85 choices for barbecue sauce. If you are that picky, ALDI may not be for you.
- Deposit a quarter for a shopping cart- receive quarter back when you park cart back in its spot. I find myself pushing other peoples carts back to the other stores so this is less work for me!
- Bring your own bags or boxes to carry everything home. This could be a surprise for first time shoppers but I know that we frequently find ourselves with more plastic bags than we know what to do with...
- Some people apparently are REALLY into German Chocolate, which they have in abundance. I’m more of a Reeces Cup guy myself, but if you are into that…
For an opposite take on the do it yourself aspects of ALDI and amusing comments to an editor at the City Paper …
In short, all the reasons I like ALDI’s could very well be all the reasons someone else might hate it. For more insights on where to find a good deal in Mt Pleasant, call me this week!
