The iFiveK

This coming April 13th at 6:30 PM is this year’s running of the tech industry’s version of the Charleston Bridge Run. Instead of an early morning start, the iFiveK starts in the late afternoon and is more of a fun occasion. Its participants are all people from the local tech industry. In addition to the actual race, it is an event for networking and socializing at the after-party. This event began in 2007 with 250 participants and has grown to 1,210 participants in 2016.

The race begins and ends at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. The race not only rewards the fastest team, but there is also an award for the team showing the most spirit. There is no limit to the number of participants on a given team. This year, the largest team is Blackbaud, with 228 participants. The critera for this award is not only based on how the team places in the race but other factors such as costumes, training videos and social media participation. So, you do not have to be the fastest team to win the iFiveK SPIRIT award.

After the race, all participants, family and friends gather to celebrate. At last year’s race after-party, there were 1,680 slices of pizza consumed. Although there is no data on the amount of beer consumed, a good time was had by all. The after-party is a great time for the participants to network and socialize in a relaxed atmosphere.

Proceeds from the event go towards CODEcamp scholarships (which I have previously written about) and other education related programs.

Judging by the race’s number of participants over its brief history, one can tell the impact the tech industry is having on our city and the surrounding area. It is becoming a larger segment of our business community with each passing year. This means an ever-growing influence on the vibrancy of the local real estate industry, as well as the overall business community.

I hope you are enjoying my blog posts and will remember me when you need the services of a Realtor to guide you through the home buying process.
