The Arthur Ravenel Bridge will Wow you!
One of my favorite things about the Charleston area is the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which has become a Charleston landmark. The beautiful bridge took my breath away the first time I saw it! Look at this photo I took from a boat recently - when you are under it, you are even more amazed by its size! It is a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River connecting the Charleston peninsula with Mount Pleasant, and was completed in July 2005 to replace the old Grace and Pearman bridges.
It can seem a bit intimidating to drive across with the eight lanes of traffic, four in each direction, but I now consider it a privilege and love to admire its graceful lines. There is a pedestrian and bicycle path on the south side of the bridge. The total length of the bridge is 13,200 feet or 2.5 miles long!
The Cooper River Bridge Run is a big event held every year at the beginning of April with up to 50,000 runners and walkers starting the race on the Mount Pleasant side and ending in downtown Charleston. The next bridge run is April 1, 2017.
