New Restaurant Nico to Open Soon in Mt Pleasant
One of the fondest memories I have about “old” Mt Pleasant was getting together with a group of new friends the Pizza Hut on Coleman Boulevard after a Friday night football game. I will have to add that back in 1983, the restaurant selection East of the Cooper was nothing like what we have today. I had met a number of creative and talented Wando High School students at the Governor’s School for the Arts in 11th grade, and was visiting from the upstate. The group eventually almost filled the restaurant for what seemed like at least three hours.
Fast forward to 2017 and Chef Nico Romo is only a few weeks away from opening his new restaurant in the same building. You may know him from the Upper King Street institution Fish, where he ran the kitchen since 2007. Romo was named in 2009 as one of only 56 Master French Chefs in the United States. He was one of the early supporters if the Sustainable Seafood Initiative in Charleston.
I was pleased to see the adaptive reuse of the space during construction. The interior has been totally transformed by exposing the trusses and dining has been expanded to include a covered outdoor seating and bar area. An addition has been made to house the completely new kitchen which may include wood-fired French classics as well as local seafood and of course, oysters.
I look forward to hanging out there this fall and having oysters and adult beverages with some of those same Mt Pleasant "kids".
