Moving to Summerville SC Part 6 Road Trip
As I mentioned last week we went on a short road trip up north to Washington DC and Nags Head in North Carolina. Last month when we had decided to go to Washington, I wanted to see if we could arrange a tour of the Capitol and White House etc. I remember in the early 80’s when we went with my mother-in-law she arranged tours with her Iowa representatives and wondered if this could still be done.
Since I had recently relocated to South Carolina I had to look up who my senators and representative were. It doesn’t matter if you are democrat or republican or whatever, I believe it’s a good idea to know who represents you in Washington.
With the internet it’s very easy to look up contact numbers and email addresses. So about a month ago, I emailed our senators - Lindsey Graham & Tim Scott and my representative Mark Sanford and asked if they could arrange any tours for the two of us. Imagine my surprise when they responded – or their offices responded. Senator Graham’s office said they couldn’t do anything. Senator Scott’s office arranged a tour of the Senate and Rep Sanford’s office arranged a tour of the House and Capitol. Neither one could get us in the White House because of short notice but the fact of the matter is that when we were in Washington the White House was having upgrades completed so I don’t know if any tours were being conducted. My husband and I had private tours for both the Senate and the House and they were great. I’m surprised more people don’t think of contacting their representatives – there were public tours with hundreds of people and I’m pretty sure we learned more about the history and secrets than most of them.
Besides touring the monuments at the last moment we decided to go to Ford’s Theater…thinking it was just a quick walk-though of the theater. We were totally surprised how informative it was and we learned so much – I would definitely recommend it and everything is free (or paid with our tax money!). I’ll attach some photos.
I’m curious if anyone has visited our nation’s Capitol and what you found most interesting.
