Meet the Artist: John Chitwood

Piccolo Spoleto Merchandise Booth set up in Marion Square

"Music Lessons" is a digital painting created by local artist, graphic designer, and Mt. Pleasant neighbor John Chitwood. Be sure to come by Marion Square this Saturday morning to meet John and learn more about his artwork. You can also catch him on the WCIV Channel 4 morning show “Lowcountry Live” Friday at 10 am!

Starting with his digital photo of a building on Church Street, Chitwood says that he “cropped the image vertically, saturated and tweaked the colors, added textures and pixel stylization, eliminated some, and added other elements and supplemental imagery to achieve the compositional and narrative goals I wanted. “The illustration was created over the course of a week in early March, and the end result bears very little resemblance to the original.”

It was such fun to do, and the response has been so positive, that I have created additional brand new works as companion pieces along the same "Window Box Series" in preparation for a gallery exhibit. They will be on display in the lobby of the Gaillard Auditorium throughout the Piccolo Spoleto Festival.”

A Charleston native and Porter Gaud graduate, John found inspiration for his early wildlife drawings in the forests and marshes surrounding his home. He went on to pursue art education at the University of Georgia and graduated from Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, before returning to Charleston in 1988. With an interest in commercial art and marketing, he further developed his design background to include publishing, printing, and web development. In 2000, he founded Renaissance Graphic Design and 16 years later still delivers the finest in creative design services.

When not relaxing in his garage woodshop or cooking, John, with his wife Debbie and daughter Katie, enjoy spending time together at Edisto and traveling with friends.

Framed prints from the show and posters will be available for sale both at Gaillard and through his new website,

This year’s 17 day Piccolo Spoleto festival kicks off May 26th with one of my favorite events, the annual Sunset Serenade by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Featuring “something for everyone” including selections ranging from The Sound of Music to Jurassic Park and West Side Story, the performance will be held on the Cooper River side of the U.S. Custom House on South Market Street and Concord Street.   Beginning in 1979, The 17 day event runs concurrently with Spoleto Festival, beginning the Friday before Memorial Day each May. The goal of the event is to provide accessible music, theater, film, dance, and visual arts by local and regional artists to lowcountry.
