Captain's Comics & Toys Has Charleston's Best Vintage and New Comics
Ahhh Comic Books…
With our son enjoying the Spider-Man and Batman movies, it seemed like a good excuse to dust off the proverbial old “Comic Book Collection” a few years ago. He was interested in seeing the early versions of characters in X-Men and the Avengers and the different story lines that had influenced the recent movies. Ranging from 1972 through 1979, my comics were thoroughly read. 1-Because computer special effects hadn’t been invented yet, and superhero movies before cgi animation were just ridiculous. 2- We only had three network channels, plus PBS)
Then I realized that he had never been to a Comic Book Store. Fortunately, Captain’s Comics & Toys is located near Orange Grove Elementary at the Northbridge Shopping Center in West Ashley next to McDonalds. He selected his first comic book, which was Teen Titans #14, and thus began our weekly pilgrimage. We found that they have a lot of great stuff besides comics - like Transformers, Star Wars, and Video Game collectibles. This is now also our go to spot for their vast selection of Lego characters.
Free Comic Book Day is always the first Saturday in May. Last year they gave away over 5,000 Free Comics!
Captain’s Comics Expo
The 10th Annual Captain’s Comics Expo will be held again in Mt Pleasant at the Omar Shriners Lodge at Patriots Point! Make plans now to enjoy the two day event which will be held February 24-25, 2018. Basically, it's 16,000 square feet of original art, posters, and of course, thousands of comics and collectors items.
Last Year the convention was a really a lot of fun, um, for my son, especially the costume contest! We went on Saturday for the “Star Wars Experience.” The food vendors were excellent, parking was free and easy. We especially enjoyed seeing our friend, Charleston watercolor artist and illustrator of the 2016 Expo Poster Vernon Washington.
Voted Charleston’s Best Comics Store in the City Paper as long as I can remember- so at least ten years!
OPEN Monday through Saturday from 11-7.
