In the recent event of Hurricane Matthew, many people have suffered irreparable damages to their homes. My roof took quite a beating, however, the damage minor, the big brown water spots on my white, smooth ceiling are the tale-tell signs of a much bigger, growing issue up on the roof. We decided to bite the bullet and make the call to the insurance company and make the claim to get the roof fixed. A couple days later an adjuster and a roofer showed up at the house to assess the damage and tell us their recommendations of how to remedy the problem. The roofer said asphalt shingles. When I told him we had been considering the option of metal, he was quick to shy me away from that option. So that got my wheels turning as to why.
In a wide range of costs, metal roofs will cost you between $3.00 and $12.00 per square foot. Some factors that are easily forgotten is that metal is a premium material so the costs are higher than that of asphalt shingles. Also, it takes a much more skilled tradesman to install the roof, and the complexity of the roof itself, causing more cuts for peaks and dormers and such, will drive the price up quickly. Also, the price of the under layer and tearing off and disposal of the old roof add up, too. If you live in a geographic location where it is difficult to get the materials, your roof cost just went up significantly! Although, metal roofing can last up to 50 years!
So the question is, why pay the higher price of metal roofing, well folks, the answer is durability and longevity. It's really a no brainier, but you always have to do what your wallet can afford is the main objective. Choose wisely my friends.
