A Local Tech Company Goes International
Charleston-based Blackbaud is moving into the crowdfunding market in a big way. It recently acquired a British company called JustGiving for about $121 million. Blackbaud builds software for nonprofit organizations.
This deal launches the company into a fast-growing form of charity. Crowdfunding combines the gifts of many small donors into one able to make large gifts to worthwhile causes such a disaster relief. Blackbaud says that JustGiving has gifted $4.5 billion globally since 2001. Blackbaud’s bet is that JustGiving can likewise emerge as a big name in American giving. The company’s believes that its already strong ties to the nonprofit sector will enable it to blend traditional philanthropy with new forms of charity.
This is a great example of our local tech sector expanding its influence outside of the United States, introducing even more citizens of other countries to the advantages of Charleston as a place to live and work. This will benefit all local industries including the real estate business. Charleston continues to benefit from the local tech presence!
