West Ashley Revitalization Project - Draft Plan
My wife and I attended the latest meeting of the minds this past Monday (Sept 18, 2017). There was a meeting held in August, 2017, and here are my notes. There was a 45 min high level presentation to go over the Draft Report/Plan and then you could go to 5 tables to discuss the details if you wanted. The WA Revitalization Commission is looking to get the word out as much as possible, as they hope to have the Final Plan Approved by City Council in December (2017). They want everyone who is interested to stay involved and provide feedback. Feel free to take a look at the Draft Report (all 250+ pages) at: www.planwestashley.com/engage
Here are the Key Topics (tables) they have been targeting over the past 3-6 months:
- Community Design & Land Use
- Green Infrastructure & Sustainability
- Economic Development
Remember this Plan has been shaped by the Input of Hundreds of community members over numerous meetings and workshops. The committee listened to all the attendees and targeted each and every one of the concerns, recommendations, etc. The committee then put all that feedback into the above 5 Topics/Ideas and have come up with this Draft Plan.
Once the Draft is done, then the Implementation Plan will get started. The Immediate tasks will take 1-2 Years, then there is the Near-Term tasks which are scheduled to take 2-5 years and last would be the more complicated (and expensive tasks) which will take greater than 5 years.
I can not write about all of the Plans and Changes that were presented in the Report, so again, if you are really interested, I encourage you to read the Draft Plan. The Commission is holding more meetings to make sure as many people can provide their feedback (check schedules on the www.planwestashley.com site). I personally found the Implementation Matrix (page 226) to be a good refresher on what all this Draft Plan was targeting to get done and how long we could expect it. It also shows which Government Agency is responsible (managing and dollar-wise).
Overall I think the Plan is moving in the right direction. The Commission is proposing a lot of changes that were suggestions from the Community as well as the Commission members and their hired Community Planning Consultants. Hopefully in the next 20 years we will see just how beautiful our wonderful West Ashley can be. More info to come….stay tuned.
