Walk the Arthur Ravenel Bridge in Charleston
People that know me, or that have read my previous blogs, are aware of how much I love the Arthur Ravenel Bridge in Charleston. Driving over it and admiring the enormous and graceful cables is always a welcome treat. It has become quite the landmark for the Charleston area. Some clients of mine are actually afraid to drive over it and will avoid doing it at all costs!
Recently, my husband and I decided to walk the bridge and just as we reached the middle of the bridge, we were fortunate to see this cargo ship go underneath. Some may not think cargo ships are pretty, but I find about any ship fascinating. Perhaps it’s because my mother and father came to the US from England on the Queen Mary ship while she was pregnant with me, many years ago – we won’t say how many.
The top of the bridge is a great spot to also view the amazing Charleston peninsula with all the historic church steeples. The bridge is 2.5 miles long, which spans between downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant, and has a walking/running/biking path with a concrete barrier from the traffic. Dogs are welcome almost everywhere in the Charleston area, but dog walking is not allowed on the bridge. There is parking available on both ends of the bridge, and you won’t find a restroom on the bridge, so plan for that. I suggest on hot days that you carry a bottle of water, and it would be better to walk at dusk or dawn.
Please be aware that there is a separate biking lane and a walking/running lane, so if you are not biking, stay out of the biking lane as they can go pretty fast. I had a brush with death when I momentarily stepped out of the walking lane just as a biker was speeding past, and he brushed my arm.
Take a stroll on the bridge soon if you haven’t done so already, while enjoying the sights of our amazing city.
