The first time I visited Patriots Point was shortly after it opened while on our fifth grade class trip to Charleston. Growing up near a lake, it was difficult to comprehend amazing to see a ship that large as. My uncle would later take us on a boat ride around the harbor where the highlight was passing underneath the colossal anchor.

The USS Yorktown –

The USS Yorktown was the second aircraft carrier named for the original 16-gun sloop launched in 1839, named for the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. The first carrier Yorktown (CV-5) sank after heavy Japanese attack during the Battle of Midway in June of 1942. Christened in January of 1943, CV-10 Launched 275 aircraft missions during the Battle for the Marcus Islands, then joined Task Force 14 for the Battle of Wake Island. The Yorktown saw duty during the Korean War and again at the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam.

The USS Laffey-

DD-724 is the Sumner Class Destroyer It earned the name, The Ship That Would Not Die after it Survived four bomb strikes and six Kamikaze strikes during the invasion of Okinawa in 1945. Named to the National Register in 1986, she has recently reopened after renovation of the engine room and rejoins the tour. For an account of the attacks and the aftermath of April 16, 1945, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBrtjRF3Cjc

The Medal of Honor Museum-

The Medal of Honor Museum is currently an integral part of the Yorktown. Currently, fundraising efforts to construct a new facility at Patriots Point are underway. To learn more about the proposed new museum see http://www.mohmuseum.org/museum

My fifth grader is beginning his first unit on World War II during this nine weeks, and I hope he will be interested in building this model which I have been saving for him...
