What comes to mind when you think about the city of Charleston? Many folks think about tasty southern cuisine, beautiful beaches and friendly locals..and all for good reason. Before I called Charleston home, sweet grass baskets were always one of the main things that came to mind in regards to our treasured city. These skillfully, hand-made baskets have been a Charleston staple for years and this Saturday we are commemorating these cherished baskets with the 12th annual, Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival. This highly anticipated festival will be honoring and celebrating the rich Gullah heritage which is greatly important to the culture and charm our city possesses today. We will be embracing the creativity of these skilled designers in the Low Country's largest showcase of sweetgrass baskets. So join us this Saturday, June 3rd at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park for this special event. The festivities begin at 9 am and end at 4 pm, featuring some of the area's best and brightest designers selling their goods. And don't forget to sign up for the sweetgrass basket demonstration from 12-3 so you can learn the trick of the trade yourself. It wouldn't be a festival without live music, so make sure to check out the impressive line-up of many local bands/musicians ranging from country to gospel, while enjoying some Gullah-inspired cuisine. Don't miss this unique opportunity to soak in some culture, and learn a little bit about the heritage that helped shape this city into the premier, sought after destination that it is today.
