Summer is almost here, and for those of us lucky enough to call the Charleston area home, that means stifling heat but also a plethora of fun ways to stay cool. For the residents of Sweetgrass, your proximity to both the Isle of Palms, as well as Shem Creek, means that you probably have more options than most.
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has become one of the most popular and easiest ways for people to not only get out on the water but also as a fun way to exercise without necessarily seeing it as exercise. A 2015 article in the Journal of Sports and Sciences which looked at the health benefits of SUP by comparing groups of “elite” and “recreational” paddle boarders found that both groups benefitted from paddle boarding and showed increased levels of fitness across multiple measurements. The bottom line being, you do not have to be a pro to pick this sport up or to take advantage of its health benefits. Furthermore, according to the American Canoe Association (ACA), participation rates have gone up every year for people 6 years old+ since they began recording in 2010. People keep coming back. It is low-impact and can be done almost anywhere the water is calm enough. For those of you in Sweetgrass, that means a multitude of SUP opportunities this summer. Here are a few places near you to give SUP a try this summer and stay cool!
Shem Creek/Mt. Pleasant
