Retiring in Charleston, South Carolina
As the baby boom generation approaches retirement age, many are seeking to live in a mild climate with an active life style.
The Charleston area is quickly becoming a popular retirement destination; due to its warm climate, nearby beaches, rich history, superior health care, and year round activities.
For some, the option of an active adult community is something they are wanting to explore and learn more about, before choosing the community they wish to call home.
Over the next 8-week period, each week, I will be sharing my views of each Active Adult community, and sharing what each community has to offer the retiring Baby Boomer, considering retirement in one of Charleston's 55+ Active Adult communities.
Of course, an Active Adult community lifestyle is not for everyone. I hope the information I will provide each week, will help to answer some questions you may have, and open a dialogue for continued discussion.
The Charleston area is presently, home to 8- Active Adult communities located throughout the tri-county area. The following is a list of these communities:
1. Del Webb - Charleston
2. Cresswind at The Ponds
3. The Elms of Charleston
4. The Pines at Gahagan
5. Marrington at Cobblestone
6. Four Seasons at The Lakes of Canebay
7. Carillon at The Ponds
8. Liberty Cottages at Park West
This week the focus is on Del Webb Charleston - the area's first Active Adult Community, located within Cane Bay Plantation, in Summerville, SC and within Berkeley County. Cane Bay Plantation is a large scale master planned small city community, with many sub-sections within its master plan, and offering living style options for all ages.
Del Webb Charleston is the sub-section for active seniors, ages 55+. When completed (which is in the very near future) this community will be complete with approximately 1,000 homes, built by Pulte Homes. Prices span from the low $200's to $400's. The homes sizes range from 1,220+ to 2,500+ sq ft with 11 floor plans to choose from.
Situated over 360 acres of manicured land, including a preserved wetland area, there are biking and walking trails throughout this community.
The clubhouse serves as the center for all of the community's activities. Within the clubhouse is a fitness center complete with exercise room, indoor lap pool, aerobics studio, studios for crafts & hobbies, a sundeck and a ballroom area. Outside the clubhouse you will find a resort-style pool, lake, dog park, and tennis.
In this community you will find homeowners commuting around by golf-cart to all the amenities & activities! You can even golf-cart to the neighborhood Publix grocery store or one of the nearby restaurants. There is a "Happening Buzz" feeling in this community. Everyone seems to know everyone and friendships seem to abound, through neighborhood clubs & activities!
There is every club imaginable here and you can choose to be as busy as you like, or not!
As this life style is very appealing to Active Adult retirees, Del Webb has already announced their 2nd Active Adult community to be built within the Nexton subdivision, also located in Summerville, SC.
If you are thinking about buying, selling, up-sizing, or down-sizing, I am here to help you explore the many options of the American Dream...Home-ownership!
