Every tropical storm that passes through has a major effect on the coast of Folly that changes it’s landscape forever.
If you are a “local” you will remember the infamous boardwark , built in 1960. There were amusement rides, a ferris wheel, shops, an arcade and a pier...a musical hub hosting big bands from Glenn Miller to Maurice Williams. It was "the place to go" on a weekend evening. While visiting, George Gershwin was inspired to compose Porgy and Bess.
Sadly storms and erosion contributed to the boardwalk’s demise and the only high rise hotel on Folly Beach was built in it’s place. But if you walk under the entrance to the pier where beach goers cool off and put out a picnic lunch, you will almost feel the presence of what used to be.
