Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 here in the LowCountry. We usually see storms heating up in the tropics in August through the beginning of October.
Most people do not want to invest in whole home generators, but did you know there is a way to hook up a portable generator to your home?
By using a generator transfer switch, you can have a qualified electrician wire certain circuits in your home to be run via your portable generator. The size of the generator will determine the amount of circuits that you can run. I primarily worry about my main refrigerator, garage refrigerator (aka - beer fridge), microwave, exhaust fan for our gas cooktop, coffee pot, some lights and ceiling fans.
The generator transfer switch will cost you about $300-400.
The generator will cost you $700-$1500 - - This depends on the size generator you want/need. If you get a bigger generator, you can most likely also run a small window/portable air conditioning unit.
Electrician will cost you $400-700
So for $1500 - $3000, depending on your requirements you can have some comforts when the power goes out!
As always, please keep me in mind if you, your friends, or family have any real estate needs in the Charleston area!
