Growth in Numbers
Charleston is currently recognized nationwide as one of America's best cities to visit. Because of Charleston's increasing popularity it is getting a lot of attention from all around the country as not only a place to visit...but a place to relocate to. In 2012 the Charleston area's population was around 750,000 people and its currently projected to reach an astonishing 1,000,000 by the year 2028 according to the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. Our reputation as a quaint southern city is starting to rapidly shift to being a major metropolitan area with absolutely no sign of slowing down. People from all over the east coast have been buying second homes here but as time goes on those second homes are starting to turn into primary residences. People from New England, New York, New Jersey and Ohio are some of the states/areas with the highest relocation rates. Our already crowded roadways are expected to become more crowded as our already 560,000 registered vehicles is expected to increase by up to 40% over the next 30 years.
Whether we like it or not, this city is growing in every way. More schools, hotels, restaurants and homes are being built and will continue to be built as this city progresses as one of the hot places to live in the US. If you are wondering why we are constantly under construction and constantly seeing new people without southern accents it is because we live in such a desirable place. It is sometimes frustrating to see our city lose a little bit of its small town feel and charm as more and more “outoftowners” are flocking in. Instead of getting angry with our beloved cities inevitable growth….try to see this as a compliment, feel blessed that we are already living in a beautiful place and embrace those who are starting to realize this and who will contribute to our cities already flourishing economy.
