2016 is about to come to a close. It’s a great time to think about the good things you personally accomplished in the year and make a list of what you want to accomplish in 2017. We use the term “New Year’s Resolutions” which are very rarely adhered to.
If you really want to have achievable improvement in your personal and professional life don’t commit to resolutions, commit to goals. Specific, written and measurable things you wish to achieve in 2017.
They need to be specific in order to be measurable and to set up a daily, weekly or monthly benchmarks. Goals such as I want to lose weight or I want to exercise more aren’t specific enough to be challenging or measurable. I want to lose 15 pounds or I want to be able to run 3 miles in 20 minutes are specific an measurable.
Next, make a plan of how you are going to achieve these goals. For example:
Goal: I want to lose 15 pounds in three months. (Doesn’t sound too hard, a little over a pound a week. You will get frustrated very quickly on the front end if the goals are too lofty.)
Once you have a complete list of actions needed to achieve your goal(s) commit them to writing and add measurable benchmarks. ie: lose 1.5 pounds a week. Put them in writing, post them where you can see them and have a visible benchmark chart of your accomplishments.
