The summer heat in the Lowcountry can be fairly oppressive. Luckily, however, there are a plethora of fun ways to cool off. Although everyone likes to be out on the water (I hope!), some are not content to simply have a relaxing cruise but would prefer a little action; like fishing.
The Lowcountry is a fishing destination, plain and simple. Whether you prefer inshore or offshore, there is an option for you. There are a multitude of charter boats in the area surrounding Sweetgrass (i.e. Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms), that will not only take you out for the type of fish you would like to catch, but will take you WHERE you’d like to go as well. I have listed several companies below, but just as an example, The Reel Deal Fishing Charters company offers everything from full day offshore trips for wahoo and tuna to shorter inshore trips for shark and the local favorite sheepshead. They will even take you crabbing! Another benefit to chartering a fishing boat is that you can do as little or as much work as you'd like. If you've never really fished and are doing it more for the experience, the captain or first mate can do everything from baiting your hook to removing the fish and cleaning it for you. If you'd like to be more hands on, they would obviously be happy to sit back and let you do some of the work.
For the more serious anglers out there, this is also the beginning of serious billfishing in the area. In addition, this is the season for trophy fish like tarpon, tuna, and wahoo. The bottom line is that fishing is a fantastic way to stay cool this summer, whether with your family or going solo. The real beauty of a chartered fishing trip is that the captain is there to make sure you have a good time. If you don’t like the type of fishing you originally set out to do, a good captain won’t hesitate to change gears and start fishing for something else to keep the party happy. Give it a shot and let me know how it goes!
