GDC Home is Now Solar Powered
Gregorie, Douglas and Company or GDC Home was founded in 1978 as a small drapery and upholstery “seconds” store. Harry Gregorie and his wife Cathy have since built a major showroom/ design center in both Charleston and Mt Pleasant. Both utilized existing commercial space which was extensively renovated. As crushed as I was to see the Krispy Kreme close, GDC has done a great job uniting the former movie theater, grocery store, and doughnut shop into one cohesive storefront.
In 2006 GDC Home expanded to a third location in Freshfields Village between Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island. This 4,500 square foot store specializes in Interior Design.
One of the main advantages of Adaptive Reuse over new construction is the tax exemptions and credits for upgrading existing commercial space. In conjunction with Hannah Solar of Atlanta, GDC has completed an integrated system of rooftop solar panels and reduced energy load with advanced climate control, LED lighting and enhanced insulation components to take their 70,000 square foot flagship Charleston facility “off the grid”. The Mt Pleasant location is currently 50% energy self sufficient.
