From beach to hiking !

The Francis Marion National Forest is located north of Charleston, South Carolina. It is named for revolutionary war hero Francis Marion who was known to the British as the Swamp Fox.

This National Forest is contained entirely in the counties of Charleston and Berkeley and is 258,864 acres (1,050 km2) in size. The forest is wedged in between the City of Myrtle Beach and the historic City of Charleston, it is along the edge of the town of Mount Pleasant, and contains the towns of AwendawHugerJamestown, and McClellanville.  To the North, it is bounded by the Santee River and to the East by the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1989, the forest was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Hugo with winds over 130-mph which leveled a third of the forest but today the forest is lush and most trees do not predate this hurricane.

There are plenty of recreation opportunities include campsites, rifle ranges, boat ramps, and several trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, including the very well know Palmetto Trail which can be a challenge to even experienced hikers.

The Francis Marion is a forest literally steeped in history.  The Francis Marion National Forest remains a lush landscape of pine stands and wildlife-filled swamps and marshes shaded by towering bald cypress trees. Four wilderness areas, one with a marked canoe trail, offer visitors a unique opportunity to glimpse the wild landscape as it might have appeared earlier in history.

The "Low Country" as we call it, has not just beaches and not just golf courses for recreation but one can hike for miles through amazing forests and discover wildlife, such as birds, alligators, snakes, all kind of insects and butterflies and of course some bugs too but all is manageable and adds to the adventure and experience of Coastal Carolina.

Come down here and visit and let me show you around. Pick up a vacation home or your permanent home, buy or rent, either is fine. Discover a neighborhood like Darrell Creek, Watermark, or Paradise Island, all just minutes away from this ancient forest.
