Fort Pemberton in Riverland Terrace
General John C. Pemberton, in 1862 was Commander of the Charleston defenses. Fort Pemberton was named after him and was constructed in defense of Charleston during the Civil War. Completed in 1863, the original buildings design shape was Pentagonal and measured
400 feet by 350 feet, it’s walls were about 12 feet high and 20 feet thick. The Forts armament included 20 guns of various calibers. Originally its 16 acres, in part was built to deny union gunboats access to the Stono River. It functioned both as a water and land battery and many of its guns faced inland to stave off any land attacks.In 1978 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 2008 was purchased by a private individual.
