Prior to a 1940 hurricane, the Cooper River Ferry shuttled passengers across the river to Mt. Pleasant and Sullivans Island from the foot of the City Market in Historic Downtown Charleston. The U.S. Navy demolished the damaged ferry building in 1942 to construct the U. S. Navy Fleet Landing. The pier and building acted in support of the Charleston Naval Shipyard (1902-1995) and in conjunction with several other facilities, including the nearby Degaussing Station. The building was utilized for off-loading sailors, supplies, general maintenance, and re-supplying of ships. This great example of adaptive reuse by Charleston Architect Reggie Gibson has by far the best setting and amenities anywhere on the Charleston waterfront. The interior is bright and spacious sporting an “industrial nautical” motif and seating for 180 inside and 100 outside. Combining the historical context of the building with clever utensil placement, the logo by Mt Pleasant’s own, Gil Shuler Graphic Design reinforces the contemporary image and themes of the restaurant.

Fleet Landing is located at 186 Concord Street across from the US Customs House which makes it easy to stop in during any visit to the Market area. It has the unusual downtown benefit of at least 30 free on-site parking spaces.
