The beaches in the Charleston area are some of the most dog friendly beaches I have ever experienced. Just yesterday, my husband and I took an evening stroll on Isle of Palms beach, and were delighted to see many dogs gleefully running along the water line and fetching balls. With so many dog owners in this area, it’s great to be able to spend some leisure time with your dog on the beach. Here are the rules for leashing from the three main beaches:
Isle of Palms – dogs must be leashed, but can be unleashed from 5am – 9am April 1 through September 14th and from 4pm – 10am between September 15th through March 31st. At all other times, dogs must be on a leash and under complete control, even in the water.
Sullivan’s Island – all dogs must have a valid Sullivan’s Island permit, including residents and visitors. Between October 1st and April 30th, dogs can be off leash 5am to noon, and on a leash at other times. Between May 1st and September 30th, dogs are not permitted on the beach 10am – 6pm, can be off leash 5am – 10am, and on leash 6pm – 5am.
Folly Beach – during the summer months of May 1st through September 30th, dogs are not allowed on the beach at all between 10am and 6pm, and must be leashed at other times. From October 1st through April 30th, dogs are welcome on the beach at any time, but need to be leashed.
Note: The tickets for violations can be steep, so please check the individual beach town websites for changes to the rules, and of course, please clean up after your dog at all times for the enjoyment of everyone at the beach. :)
