Charleston Peninsula Development Update: One of the most recent construction projects to break ground on the peninsula is the WestEdge project. Located just above of the Crosstown and across from Brittlebank Park along the Ashley River in the West Side neighborhood, many are calling it Charleston's “Discovery District”. The World Class project is planned to expand the bio-tech research and business initiatives of the Medical University of South Carolina and is a national model for a research-oriented urban infill development, the next-generation of research and discovery districts.
A place to live, learn, and earn, the planned mixed-use community will include residential units, research and office facilities, as well as grocery, dining and shopping that all promises to have a dramatic impact on the peninsula in the Brittlebank Park and West Side area.
The developers anticipate the project will create 4280 new jobs, attract 100-200 new companies, be home to 50+ shops and restaurants, and provide housing for over 2500 residents. The location is easily accessible from the crosstown and will undoubtedly offer spectacular views of the Ashley River. The first residential units are expected to be completed in September of 2017 and the first research and office facilities are expected in the summer of 2018.
WestEdge is represented as a partnership between the City of Charleston, MUSC, and private development. Take a look at the plans and more here.
