Charleston and the Hurricane
With Hurricane Matthew knocking on our doorstep, I wanted to highlight how to react and proactive when it comes to hurricane safety. This is especially for those who have never dealt with storms such as this one, and are maybe new to the area.
First and foremost, if you live on or near the coastal areas, GET OUT! No one and no building is invincible. It is imperative that you evacuate if you are within the storm surge area to get to higher ground. Charleston is susceptible to flooding. If you live in a flood zone, it would be wise to evacuate. Also, if you live inland, that does not put you out of harm’s way. Pay attention to the news sources around you and listen to their suggestions.
Stock up on gallons upon gallons of water and enough food to last you five days and then some. There is a chance you will be without power for several days. If your home is connected to a well instead of city water, make sure that you stock up on enough water for toilets and bathing. This is critical in the days following the storm.
Charge up all cell phones so you have full batteries when you lose power. I would suggest only using your phone when absolutely necessary and not just to check Facebook after a power outage. Purchase batteries, flash lights, and fill up extra tanks with gas. Stock up on activities you enjoy that do not require electricity. I am currently riding out the storm pretty far from the coast with a good book, some magazines, and crossword puzzles. And of course, a generator.
Bring any outside benches, chairs, picnic tables, hanging plants, pottery, political signs, and any lose materials indoors. These could not only cause damage to your home, but other homes around you as well. Board up windows and doors, if necessary, to make sure the doors and windows do not break or blow inside.
Do not let hurricanes and tropical storms deter you from moving to Charleston. I can promise you these events are rare, and living here is very close to living in paradise!
