Breed Specific Legislation
All Dogs Aren’t Created Equal...At least with many towns, cities, municipalities, subdivisions and others who discriminate against certain dog breeds. I am the proud owner of a Red Nose Pit Bull Terrier and a Dogo Argentino. Having these two big lovable babies has made me a bit of an advocate for these very misunderstood dogs.
Breed Specific Legislation or BSL is the ability of municipalities and subdivisions to enact laws that limit or eliminate rights of dog owners who own these kind of dogs and others. Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Mastiff are also the target of BSL.
Any dog can be made to be mean so the responsibility of a dog prone to bite rests squarely with the dog owner. This can be done through neglect, abuse, withholding food etc. Things that a responsible dog owner would never do. And meanness would never be the case when giving your pet an abundance of love and care! I know our babies are members of our family and are treated as such. Our dogs are loving, and funny. If he is feeling like it at the time, our Benji will say "I love you"!
Make your choice carefully though because large breed dogs aren’t for everyone. The challenge is due to their size but that is one of the things that make them so adorable!
And if you are lucky enough to already own one of these dogs, you should definitely check the covenants and restrictions for any neighborhood in which you are considering purchasing a home to make sure no such regulation exists.
