Prior to a 1940 hurricane, the Cooper River Ferry shuttled passengers across the river to Mt. Pleasant and Sullivans Island from the foot of the City Market in Historic Downtown Charleston. The U.S. Navy demolished the damaged ferry building in 1942 to construct the U. S. Navy Fleet Landing.
