And The Walls Came Crashing Down.....
Life on the coast is wonderful...
and then the walls came crashing down and my flood insurance didn’t cover it!
Are you violating your flood insurance policy without knowing it? Have you added walls to your garage area to make a gameroom or bedroom? Have you created an enclosed area so when the flood waters come the breakaway walls can’t “breakaway?”
These are serious questions to ask your insurance company if you are buying a home with enclosed garages or if you have done this to your home. You may NOT be covered by your flood insurance if
you violate the guidelines set by FEMA.
Many homeowners in the Charleston area have made family rooms in their garages and may not know that if there is a flood, they may not be covered.
I recently had a buyer client who faced this very problem. He was purchasing a home where the owners enclosed the entire area. After a few meetings, and phone calls with Alex Cowlin, one of our in-house insurance experts, a solution was found. Do you need information about your home? You can contact Alex at: Alex@allianceinsuranceservices.net. Tell him you read the article here on the CharlestonByDay BLOG post, and he’ll be happy to see if you have a problem. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Alex will even run a quote on your current policy to see if he can save you money! I’ll bet he can!
Here are some links to the FEMA pages that may help you.
