A Big Player in the Local Tech Community

First, I will provide a bit of background to set the stage. Charleston is consistently ranked one of the best cities in the world and is home to over 380 tech and tech related companies. Its digital economy ranks highly. We are ranked 11th in the nation for high-tech industry output and the fastest growing mid-sized metro for IT.

Charleston was also just ranked on TechNet’s “Next in Tech” metro economy index.

Charleston attracts 35 new people each day (12,700 net new people each year), two-thirds of which are 18-44 years old and highly educated. Many of the tech professionals behind Charleston’s top companies hail from places like New York or Atlanta and cite Charleston’s unbeatable lifestyle and collaborative tech community as reasons why they chose to relocate.

One of the big players in the local tech community is none other than Booz Allen Hamilton, the noted and nationally recognized management consulting firm. BAH has created a large footprint on the local technology sector and is gaining daily. A year and a half after buying the software contracting firm SPARC, Booz Allen Hamilton has a new building in Charleston and plans to hire dozens of additional workers.

The Virginia-based giant says it will hire 90 employees over the next year, growing its staff in what is becoming one of its largest markets. BAH already has about 310 workers in its software development business, resulting from its purchase of SPARC. The purchase of SPARC for nearly $52 million was one of the biggest technology acquisitions of the past few years.

And what does the foregoing mean for all of us? It means more high-paying jobs for local as well as imported personnel, adding wealth and buying power for all businesses; not the least of which is the local real estate industry.

We all benefit…. home owners, builders and real estate professionals.

If you’re thinking of buying or selling, please give me the chance to earn your business. If you are not, it’s still good to know about the many positive influences the tech industry is bringing to our wonderful area.
