3 Easy Ways to Organize Your Home
There’s something about being organized that helps the soul find rest and brings a sense of freedom from the clutter surrounding our lives. Here are 3 easy ways to get you started.
1. Separate all items into 4 piles (keep, donate, throw, move)
Take one room at a time. Do not attempt to go through the entire house in a day. Find a creative way to make or divide out 4 distinct areas in the room. One easy way might be to use ribbon. As you go through the room, place each item into one of the 4 piles. The “keep” pile are all the items you want to keep in the room. The “donate” pile are all the items you want to donate, The “throw” pile are all the items you want to throw away in the trash. The “move” pile are all items that do not belong in the current room and need to be relocated either to the garage or to another room. Once everything is separated out, take the “throw” pile immediately to the trash. Next, take the "donate" pile and put it in the back of your vehicle so that you will be committed to stopping by your friendly donation center and dropping it off on your next errand run. For the "move" pile you'll want to take those items to the garage or room they belong in. Finally, all that's left is the "keep" pile. Take everything in the "keep" pile and start organizing that. If it's clothes, you can color coordinate it, organize it by style, or organize it by day of the week, etc.. Be creative and have fun with it.
2. Box up items using labels
Now that you have everything out of the room that doesn't need to be there or doesn't belong there, you can now focus on the items that will stay. Any "keep" items that you will not be using on a regular basis (i.e. winter clothes) can and should be boxed up neatly with a label and placed in the top shelves of the closet. Any "move" items should also be boxed and labeled if they will be stored in the garage.
3. Buy an item/Get rid of an item
In order to stay organized after following steps 1 & 2 , a good rule to implement is that for every new item you bring home, you must get rid of an existing item in your home. This will help you to maintain that soul rest and freedom from clutter we all need.
